My name is Ashley Mena, and I am a sub-elite runner for the Run Boulder Athletic Club based in Boulder.
Originally from Kalamazoo, Michigan, I actually didn’t get my start running until my senior year of college (besides the one year of track and field when I was in 7th grade - if that counts!) I grew up horseback riding and snowboarding, competing collegiately for Western Michigan University’s Equestrian Team. Then one year, I made it my New Year’s Resolution to run my local half marathon. After six months of training and my first race in May of 2013 (which I finished in just over two hours), I was hooked and have been running ever since.
Not long after that race I entered the specialty run industry and met my now husband, Kyle, who convinced me to sign up for a marathon. Coaching me along the way, I not only fell in love with the distance, but all of the training and hard work that came along with it. Soon after getting married, we moved out to Boulder for a change of pace and to pursue our dreams of qualifying for the Olympic Trials. We joined the Run Boulder Athletic Club, coached by Kathy Butler, and five years after that first half marathon, I ran a 2:52:21 marathon personal best.

1 frozen banana
