We all wear many hats
If there is one thing that I have learned over the last six months, it is to embrace the variety of hats I can wear in any given day. Whether it be as an athlete, coach, mentor, friend, or significant other, I am slowly but surely discovering the beauty of pausing in between my daily roles so that I can properly transition into my next task of the day. I can’t help but to think that this concept is relevant for so many women and men, needing to switch gears and bring forward their most vibrant level of energy and focus into their careers, family lives, and personal interests.
Staying in the moment
How can we ensure that we stay grounded in the moment, despite juggling different personal roles and seeking top performance in multiple fields? Just as someone may transition from leading a board meeting at the office to helping their child with homework after school, I have been experiencing similar need to shift energy from training with my professional partner and coach in the mornings to being a coach and working with the country’s top collegiate athletes in the afternoons. These shifts in roles are what I have come to think of as my “in betweens.”
It is helpful to have a loose framework for making these transitions smooth, so that I can effortlessly (and often times blissfully) float from role to role without worrying about burnout or not being at the top of my game.
Embracing the “In Betweens"
- Identify the change of role.
- Breathe and refresh, use a grounding mantra or some kind of grounding scent like mixing a couple drops of NOW® Eucalyptus Oil with a carrier oil, such as Almond Oil, and putting into the palms of your hands, rub together and smell.** This signals the refresh.
- Welcome the intention for the next task at hand
Example of how I use this process in my own days:
“I just finished my morning training, in which I got to focus on my own physical performance and goals. Now, it is time to switch gears and get ready to coach a group of athletes who have their own set of goals and dreams.”
“I want to be able to shift my energy so I choose to release whatever happened in my last activity. It is time to release and move forward."
“My intention now is to meet these athletes where they are at right now, and bring my top level of observation and insight so that I can help accelerate their progression.”
Creating your own process
Incorporating NOW® products into this process has helped me build the habit and make it more calming. My use of essential oils (eucalyptus in particular) in between activities, Magnesium Caps and B Complex at the end of an intense energy expenditure, and a protein shake (Plant Protein Complex) at the end of my coaching sessions all help me moderate my energy and bring my best self into each part of my day.*
Our days all look different, and this process will be different for each of us, but next time you look at your schedule and realize how much is on your plate, try to embrace it and take these steps to maintain your calm and stay grounded!
