El Richard Receives Lifetime Achievement Award from NPA

October 2, 2014

NOW® founder Elwood Richard was honored by the Natural Products Association (NPA) with their Lifetime Achievement Award in a ceremony held on September 17, 2014 in conjunction with the Natural Products Expo East trade show in Baltimore, Maryland.

The NPA Lifetime Achievement Award honors pioneers in the natural products industry and is awarded on an annual basis. This designation reflects the long history of NOW’s deep commitment to the industry, which has been guided by Elwood’s vision since he started NOW almost 50 years ago.

NPA CEO Dr. Daniel Fabricant said “The committee chose Mr. Richard as the recipient of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award because, as the award states, they felt he has served as a pioneer for the natural products industry.”

Educated as a physical chemist, El expected it would be temporary when he joined his father’s company, Fearn Soya, in 1960. Seeing a need to help people be healthy, he started the Fruitful Yield stores in the Chicago suburbs in 1963, which led to the launch of NOW Foods in 1968 to supply quality products at reasonable prices to the stores.

With almost 50 years of dedication exclusively to natural foods retailers, NOW is currently one of the largest providers of products and services to natural food retailers, and is still owned by the Richard family today.

Elwood Richard passed away on April 7, 2017, but his spirit and passion for empowering healthier lives continues through NOW’s commitment to producing premium quality natural health products.
