Acid Redux™ FAQ's

What is GERD?

Hydrochloric acid is secreted due to chemical signals in the stomach. This digestive acid secretion is one of the links in the chain of events necessary for proper digestion of food. Some people overproduce stomach acid and suffer occasional heartburn when they consume certain acid-stimulating foods and beverages.

A more serious condition is called GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease). GERD is a syndrome caused by a dysfunctional lower esophageal sphincter that permits an upward flow of gastric hydrochloric acid into the esophagus.  In other words, the top of the stomach fails to close properly and allows stomach acid to escape upwards. This abnormal upward flow of gastric acid causes burning and continual erosion of the esophageal tissue.  This can happened even if the stomach lacks enough acid to properly digest proteins and minerals, and is sometimes caused by food intolerances, stress or other factors.

How does Acid Redux™ work in the stomach to provide relief?

Acid Redux™ has a soothing influence on the smooth muscle, esophageal mucosa (mucus membraines) and blood vessels of the gastrointestinal system (GI) by buffering the hydrochloric acid secretions that cause the irritation experienced by those with GERD or acid reflux. Acid Redux™ does not treat GERD or acid reflux disease, but does relieve the symptoms. The acid-neutralizing composition of Acid Redux™ includes the rapid-acting alkaline minerals potassium and magnesium hydroxide, as well as the longer acting alkaline mineral calcium carbonate. These alkaline minerals are effective in directly reducing stomach acidity. This product is equally helpful in reducing the acidity of orange and tomato juice, as well as caffeinated beverages like coffee and tea.

The proper low pH (acidity) in the stomach should not be confused with the overall pH of the body, which is sometimes assessed by urinating on a pH test strip with the first urination of the morning. This test approximates the pH of the bloodstream as a means of assessing the body’s reserves of alkaline, buffering minerals, which affects a wide range of health factors, including bone health.  This is about metabolic pH, not stomach acid or foods that taste acidy.

Is Acid Redux™ as effective in buffering hydrochloric acid as some other over the counter products?

Laboratory testing comparing Acid Redux™ to  four major over-the-counter brands of antacids has shown that Acid Redux™ is faster acting in its ability to neutralize a hydrochloric acid solution of pH 2.20. Its stronger “base nature” (alkalinity) initiates the buffering effect on the H+ ions (positive hydrogen), allowing the neutralizing effect to react quickly and over a longer period of time for extended relief.

Is Acid Redux™ like the prescription proton pump inhibitors that stop the secretion of gastric acid in the stomach?

No, Acid Redux™ is not a proton or gastric acid pump inhibitor. It does not inhibit the production of gastrin (the hormone that stimulates the production of gastric juice), as proton pump inhibitors do.
