Ask people to name a dietary mineral and the two answers you’ll most likely receive are calcium and magnesium. Probably the most well-known of all the mineral nutrients, calcium is the one found most abundantly in the human body. While many of us know calcium as the bone mineral we need to maintain healthy skeletal structure, this is just a tiny fraction of calcium’s beneficial properties.

Our bodies cannot produce calcium on its own, so we have to obtain it from our diet. In order to maintain the body’s tight control over serum calcium levels, bones are constantly being “remodeled.” Remodeling consists of calcium deposition and loss (resorption) from bone tissue. This process changes throughout the life cycle. During childhood and adolescence the deposition of calcium is greater than resorption due to rapid growth and development. During early and mid-adulthood they’re basically even. But later in life resorption begins to outpace deposition, leading to bone loss and the health concerns that accompany it. Optimum dietary intake of calcium is important to offset this imbalance as we head into our later years.
Like calcium, magnesium is abundant in the human body and is just as vital to our health and well-being. This important mineral nutrient is a cofactor in more than 3000 metabolic reactions.
