We hear this term more and more these days in regard to health and aging, but what is a free radical? Simply put, a free radical is any molecule with a single, unpaired electron. Free radicals are naturally produced by our body through the normal functioning of body systems, various physiochemical conditions, exposure to external sources such as pollutants and chemicals, and other avenues. There’s no way to avoid them; they’re a result of normal physiological processes.
So why are free radicals bad? A molecule with an unpaired electron is highly unstable and reactive and will seek out other molecules to either rob them of an electron or to give their remaining electron to. In doing so a free radical can damage a cell and its important constituents such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and even DNA, all of which free radicals actively seek out. This can lead to overall disruption of our body’s delicate balance, known as homeostasis.
Over the course of your life these free radicals and the damage they cause accumulates, and scientists theorize that this accumulated damage contributes to flagging health as we age, and the inevitable aging process itself.*
As noted above, we can’t avoid free radicals; they’re a result of the normal metabolic processes that take place every minute of every day. But we can minimize their impact on our health and our appearance with free radical scavengers. A free radical scavenger may also be known as an antioxidant, and refers to any molecule that’s stable enough to donate an electron to a free radical currently on a tear through your body, neutralizing it or reducing its capacity to do harm.
Nature provides a wealth of nutrients and substances that can fill this role, from everyday vitamins such as vitamins C and E and peptides like glutathione to more specialized nutrients such as alpha lipoic acid and resveratrol.
These days it’s almost impossible to avoid some sort of daily exposure to environmental pollutants, chemicals and other substances that can generate free radicals in our body. Even the simple act of breathing generates these harmful rogue molecules. But you can help minimize their impact on your body and your health with quality free radical scavengers from NOW.
We choose only proven, natural free radical scavengers and antioxidants that are supported by research, and every product we produce is manufactured with our industry-leading attention to quality.
