Taking Responsibility For Health

The condition of "Health" is not the "absence of disease." Health occurs when the body is in balance. The body can usually maintain and heal itself when it is provided with the basic things it needs (nutrients) and it is not abused through lack of exercise and intake of pollutants (pesticides, herbicides, drugs, etc.). Unfortunately, modern medicine has become focused on the removal of disease states using pharmaceutical medicines and surgery rather than on lifestyle changes and natural methods.

The prevailing mentality of conventional medical practitioners is that of symptom removal rather than the correction of original cause of the problem. In many cases, the treatment (usually pharmaceutical medications) creates additional problems by affecting one biochemical pathway, thereby throwing off other associated pathways.

These consequences are known as "side effects." If the side effects are serious enough, sometimes even to the point of begetting their own disease states, more drugs are prescribed to alleviate these symptoms. Thus starts a vicious cycle of medical treatment and dependence on the system. Although medical treatment is necessary at times, many people are unaware of the steps that they can take through lifestyle changes that will improve their condition, while increasing the efficacy of medical interventions.

The achievement of "Health" defined in terms of "balance" therefore has become incumbent on the individual. Increasing numbers of people are relying less on conventional methods and more on natural modes of treatment in order to attain "Health" or "Balance". This shift in consciousness has resulted in the growth of the Natural Products Industry, as well as an increase in the amount and quality of scientific research being done in the areas of nutrition and alternative medicine.

Although it is not advisable to forego medical treatment in the event of a serious illness, prevention of the onset of chronic disease and reducing the effects of aging can enhance quality of life whether you are young, elderly, or somewhere in between.
