Bloomingdale, IL (August 1, 2011) – NOW Health Group President Al Powers was honored for his decades of commitment to the natural products industry when he received the 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award from Nutrition Business Journal at the 14th annual NBJ Summit in Dana Point, California.
This annual Lifetime Achievement Award, started in 2001, recognizes “accomplished executives who go above and beyond the call of duty on behalf of the nutrition industry.” The recipient is chosen by the NBJ Editorial Advisory Board, which selected Al “for his commitment to the improvement of the dietary supplement industry for the past 37 years, and his contributions to the worldwide success of NOW Foods that elevated the brand to the No. 1 position in the natural products channel.”
“When I entered the industry in 1974, the FDA wanted to regulate dietary supplements as drugs and severely limit the potencies of vitamins,” Al said “We’ve fought many battles since that time to maintain access for consumers to products that empower people to lead healthier lives. I encourage the next generation of leaders in our industry to dedicate their lives’ work to the mission of the health food industry. We need to remember that we have always rallied as an industry to prevail against the forces that would destroy us. If we unite and work together, we will continue to succeed.“
Al, who has been part of the NOW Foods team since 1974, joins a distinguished list of past winners including NOW founder Elwood Richard, who received the award in 2003. Other industry recipients of this award include John Carlson of Carlson Labs, Loren Israelson of UNPA, Howard Schiffer of Vitamin Angels and Mark Blumenthal of ABC, among others.
