On October 23, 2008 NOW Foods received the Illinois Governor’s Pollution Prevention Award. This esteemed award recognizes businesses who protect Illinois’ environment through outstanding pollution prevention measures. NOW was one of thirteen Illinois companies to receive the award this year. The strength and diversity of NOW’s environmental and sustainability program was fundamental in being chosen.
“These organizations are leading the way in finding and using new ways to reduce waste and protect the environment. They have made an ongoing commitment to prevent pollution that, in the long run, will make their employees and our communities healthier,” said Illinois Governor, Rod Blagojevich. Recipients of the Governor’s Pollution Prevention award are selected based on a wide range of criteria. Among the most substantial, energy conservation, water reduction, pollution prevention, community involvement, and waste minimalization are all key factors in determining the most worthy recipients. “This award recognizes the entire NOW organization” said Jim Emme, NOW’s Chief Operations Officer, who added, “It takes a company wide effort to do as much as we’ve done. This award is based on the collective efforts of the entire NOW staff.” NOW is currently working on additional pollution prevention initiatives and has already expressed its intent in applying for the 2009 Illinois Continuous Improvement Award. This “follow up” award is presented to previous winners of the Governor’s Pollution Prevention Award, based on exemplary efforts to further improve their pollution prevention efforts.
According to NOW President, Al Powers, “We are honored to receive the Governor’s Pollution Prevention Award, since it represents our commitment and the efforts of our people toward the sustainability of our environment and waste reduction.
