NOW Foods Receives 2009 Illinois Governor's Sustainability Award for Continuous Improvement

Thirty eight Illinois companies and organizations that have been honored for their significant achievements in protecting our environment, helping to sustain the future, and improving the economy.  The Governor’s Sustainability Awards were presented by the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center (ISTC) in Champaign during a luncheon.  ISTC is a division of the Institute of Natural Resource Sustainability at the University of Illinois.

Since 1987, ISTC has presented Governors awards to organizations in Illinois that have demonstrated a commitment to environmental excellence through outstanding and innovative sustainability practices.  Any Illinois public or private organizations is eligible to apply for an award.  Organizations who are winning for the first time receive the  Sustainability Award.  Those organizations that have won in past years and are continuing their environmental efforts are awarded a Continuous Improvement Award.

"The efforts of these businesses and organizations demonstrate that it is possible to meet social and economic needs while minimizing impacts on the environment.  Present and future generations will appreciate their foresight," said John C. Marlin, ISTC Acting Director.

This award recognizes the many individuals and departments that have so diligently worked on projects that help our business run more efficiently and reduce our impact on the environment.  Some of the projects that were noted by ISTC during the presentation include the installation of a solar power grid on the NOW Foods rooftop, the conversion from petroleum-based plastic bags to corn-based bags, the conversion from virgin corrugated board to 100% recycled-content board for our shipping boxes, and several energy conservation projects including the retrofit to fluorescent warehouse lighting.

These projects result in reduced energy usage, removal of hazardous and toxic materials from our supply chain, extending the life of our resources, and the reduction of our carbon and water footprints.  Additionally, they save time and money and help our business run better.
